Historic Pipe Organ

A video produced by Brian Johnston to tell how a pipe organ was built.

This organ is located at the Great Auditorium in Ocean Grove, New Jersey. It was built in 1907 but installed in the auditorium in 1908. It is a Robert Hope-Jones organ.

Robert Hope-Jones is considered to be the inventor of the theatre organ in the early 20th century. He thought that a pipe organ should be able to imitate the instruments of an orchestra, and that the console should be detachable from the organ.

The song played in the video is called "Litanies", composed by Jehan-Ariste Alain in 1937, catalogue number JA 119.
